About Colombia Huila Sugarcane Decaf Coffee

A sugarcane decaf from Huila that actually tastes like Colombian coffee. Molasses, malty sweetness and a clean citrus lift.

Colombia Decaf is a single origin from Huila, one of Colombia's best growing regions, decaffeinated using the EA sugarcane method. Here's how it works: Colombia grows sugarcane in abundance, and its molasses is fermented into ethanol, then combined with acetic acid to make ethyl acetate, a naturally derived compound that binds to caffeine. The green beans are steamed, soaked, and taken through multiple extraction cycles until around 97% of the caffeine is gone, then steamed again to remove the ethyl acetate before drying and polishing. Unlike harsher decaf methods, sugarcane EA leaves the flavour compounds largely intact, and the beans keep a distinct sweetness through roasting. That's why it suits Colombian coffee so well. Roasted weekly at our Hurstville roastery in Sydney. Decaf for people who still care what's in the cup.

Flavour notes

  • Molasses sweetness through the body, deep and rounded
  • Malty, biscuity middle
  • Citrus brightness on the finish, clean and lively

Best for
Anyone who wants a proper coffee after lunch. As espresso it makes a sweet, rounded shot that holds up in flat whites and lattes, and most people won't pick it as decaf. Filter and plunger bring out the malt and citrus. Ideal for evening drinkers, caffeine-sensitive households, or as the second bag next to your regular coffee.

Tasting profile

  • Body: Medium, rounded
  • Acidity: Medium, citric
  • Sweetness: Molasses, malt
  • Roast level: Medium

Brewing recipes

  • Espresso: 22g in, 44g out, 28-32 seconds
  • Filter / V60: 1:16 ratio (60g per litre), medium grind, 92-94°C water, 3:30 brew time
  • Plunger / French press: 1:15 ratio, coarse grind, 4 minute steep

Decaf roasts a little differently, so if your shots run fast, grind finer than you would for our regular Colombians. Call (02) 9580 1300 or drop into the Hurstville roastery if you want a hand dialling it in.

Love this decaf! Tastes just as good as a regular coffee and works perfectly in our Breville Barista Touch. ☕️

DECAF COFFEE

This is a really great decaf that is an excellent all-rounder. I've used this for espresso and long backs and flat whites and it does all jobs really well. Great to have more coffee in the day without losing sleep.

It's one of those beans that give flavour without being overpowering.
