About Guatemala Las Amapolas Coffee
A washed SHB from Huehuetenango's high slopes. Dark chocolate and nougat with a bright lemon lift.
Guatemala Las Amapolas is a washed single origin from Huehuetenango, whose name comes from the Aztec Nahuatl language and translates as "place of the ancestors." This is serious altitude country: the coffee grows on mountain slopes between 1,350 and 2,000 metres, earning the SHB grade, strictly hard bean. That grade isn't a label, it's physics. At this elevation the cherries ripen slowly under intense daytime sun while cold, moist winds cool the slopes at night, and the beans develop a dense, hard core. Slow-grown, high-density coffee carries more complexity into the cup, which is why Huehuetenango ranks among the best coffee regions in the world. This lot is grown by smallholder and medium-sized farms across the region. Roasted weekly at our Hurstville roastery in Sydney.
Flavour notes
- Dark chocolate powder through the body, dry cocoa richness
- Nougat sweetness in the middle, round and smooth
- Bright lemon lift on the finish, clean and citric
Best for
Drinkers who want structure and sweetness in the same cup. As espresso the chocolate-nougat core makes a rich, rounded shot with a lively edge, excellent in flat whites. Filter brewing brings the lemon brightness forward and shows off what high-altitude Guatemalan coffee does best. A classic for people who take their black coffee seriously but still do milk mornings.
