About Ethiopia Shantawene Specialty Coffee

Grade 1 washed Ethiopian from Shantawene village — the benchmark for clean, floral Ethiopian filter coffee.

Ethiopia Shantawene is a single origin coffee from Shantawene village in the Gedeo Zone of Sidamo, Ethiopia. Roasted weekly at our Hurstville roastery in Sydney. Shantawene is one of the most respected villages for washed Ethiopian coffee — clean, floral, fruit-forward. This is what people mean when they say "Ethiopian washed."

Flavour notes

  • Jasmine in the aroma — the classic Ethiopian floral signature
  • Peach sweetness through the body
  • Lemon brightness on the finish, clean and lingering

Best for

Filter coffee drinkers who want what Ethiopian washed coffee was made to do. V60, Chemex, AeroPress, batch brew. Best black to experience the jasmine-peach-lemon arc fully. A classic specialty coffee that delivers exactly what the cupping notes promise.

Brewing recipes

  • Filter / V60: 1:16 ratio (60g per litre), medium grind, 94-96°C water, 3:30 brew time
  • AeroPress: 17g coffee, 220g water at 85°C, 2 minute steep, gentle plunge
  • Chemex: 1:17 ratio, medium-coarse grind, 95°C water

Espresso is not recommended — the delicate florals and lemon brightness are best preserved through filter brewing. Call (02) 9580 1300 or drop into the Hurstville roastery if you want a hand getting the most out of it.
